Why FBRA?

Our Mission: to build character and integrity in young men and women for a lifetime of learning and service

FBRA is one of many independent schools in the Asheville area. However, we are the only divided-gender middle school designed specifically to address the unique needs of young men and women today. By combining a rigorous, globally inspired, college preparatory curriculum with a confidence-building outdoor program, international field experience, and service learning component, we prepare students for happiness and success in high school, college, and the competitive world beyond.

The result of the FBRA experience is young men and women of the utmost social and emotional development– mature, confident, respectful, grounded, and upstanding, who are comfortable speaking in public, at ease in leadership positions, and happy working independently. Involved in their communities, FBRA students display integrity and awareness, and become ready not just to succeed in world, but poised to actively, positively contribute to it.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

-William Butler Yeats

To achieve this goal, the staff at FBRA are focused on one thing–your child. Our talented instructors bring their passions into the classroom, the rivers, our physical education and advisory program, as well as our international field-experience to Costa Rica. FBRA staff develop deep, caring relationships built upon unique and unforgettable shared experiences both in and outside of the traditional classroom setting that inspire a true love of learning. The small size of our classes, school, and community allow us to pay close attention to social, emotional and academic needs of each individual, adapting curricula and formulating lessons that “fuel the fire” more than “fill the bucket.”
