FBRA BACK-TO-SCHOOL FLOAT/PICNIC 2025
All Current FBRA families are cordially invited to celebrate back-to-school with us! Come to just the float, or just the picnic, or stay for the whole shebang!
Wednesday, August 20, 2025
1990 Riverside Drive (FBRA North Campus)
FLOAT: 3:00 - 5:00
PICNIC: 5:00 - 6:30

ABOUT THE FLOAT
Join FBRA for a family-friendly float on an urban stretch of the French Broad River while also honoring the life and legacy of Peter and Daniel Lucas, father and brother of FBRA founding board member Greg Lucas. All funds will go towards funding an endowment for the Peter and Daniel Lucas Scholarship Fund. Unlike FBRA's Financial Aid Fund, which is distributed among all eligible applicants, this full scholarship would reward one student who demonstrates financial need combined with the desire to enroll for three years at the French Broad River Academy. Suggested donation is $25 per participant. Thanks in advance for your support.
Float Timeline:
- 3:00 - 3:30 p.m. - Meet at the North Campus (Boys Program) dressed and ready for the river (swimsuits, closed-toed shoes, sun protection, etc). Load your watercraft onto our trailers.
- 3:30 - 3:45 p.m. - Shuttle to put-in at Silverline Park, 1050 Riverside Drive (Ride in FBRA vans to put-in…. Leave towel and change of clothes in your car at North Campus).
- 3:45 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. - Paddle/float (approx).
- 5:00 - All floaters are invited to stay for the FBRA Back-to-School Picnic
Notes/Considerations:
- Personal boats, paddle boards, and tubes may be dropped in advance at the put-in at Silverline Park.
- FBRA will provide shuttle of people and boats/boards/tubes from the North Campus to the put-in. If you need shuttle, please indicate so on the registration form. There may not be space on the shuttle if you do not reserve a spot.
- Participants are encouraged to carpool as there is limited parking.
- Participants are responsible for securing their own river craft.
- If the water level is exceptionally low, we will paddle on “Lake FBRA” in front of the school’s canoe ramp up to the bridge and back. If water is too high, we will notify the community that the float will be cancelled.
- Parents are responsible for their own children. If your child is participating in the float and you are not, please make sure that you have enlisted the aid of another parent to supervise your child. FBRA staff will have no supervisory or safety role on the float.
ABOUT THE PICNIC
FBRA will provide fried chicken, and we are asking families to bring sides, desserts, drinks, and so on. Please indicate what you are bringing on the sign up form. We also need folks to help with set up and clean up.
We will have long tables set up inside our canoe bays, ready to receive your dishes; when you arrive just bring your items to the table and then enjoy an evening of community by the river!
Please LABEL any of your personal dishes with your name -- masking tape works well.
Consider bringing your own folding chairs and/or picnic blanket; seating is limited.
If you are floating, you can drop off your potluck items at 3:00.
At the picnic, all of our staff will be there so you can "meet the teacher." Additionally, our Salamander Parent Association (SPA) will have a booth where you can learn about ways to get involved as a volunteer.
