Every morning, students sit with their advisories, bonding, playing, and preparing for the day ahead. This opportunity give students a chance to get to know each other better and be supportive to their friends and peers.

Working independently by the river never gets old. #frenchbroadriver #middleschool

We are proud to announce five 7th Grade Salamanders from FBRA Girls Program won awards for their projects at the Western Regional Science Fair as part of @ncsciencefair. Two students qualified for the state competition in March in Raleigh!

8th graders working on leadership skills out on the slopes by serving as instructors for new skiers in 6th grade. They're building skills in communication, empathy, listening, planning, and in-the-moment judgment calls. These skills will serve students for a lifetime and will transfer to the classroom, the office, sports team, the boardroom, you name it!

Some life lessons that our 6th graders recently learned from spending a night in a Worley's Cave in Eastern Tennessee:

1. If you can sleep in a wet, pitch-black cave, you can sleep anywhere.
2. The muddier you get, the more fun it is.
3. Don't forget batteries for your headlamp.
4. And most importantly, if you try new (and maybe scary) things, you may find that you love that thing, and that it wasn't really that scary.

FBRA teachers wear many hats, which allows them to build deep relationships with students across a number of settings. In a typical week, FBRA Boys Staff Member Christian Conway teaches math, leads climbing PE, runs the mountain biking after-school program, supervises lunches, breaks, and advisory periods, teaches the Wilderness First Aid elective, maintains all first aid supplies for the school, and leads Wednesday field lessons (this week he is climbing with 8th graders). Phew! He's also our official campfire starter at Camp Mondamin, and he's one of our most skilled ski instructors during the winter

8th graders are learning some real world math in Mr. Schroeder's current unit "Intro to Adulting." Students are learning about investing in the stock market, saving for retirement, calculating a home purchase as an investment, and more.

One way that we build strong community at FBRA is through regular assemblies. At assemblies, we gather with music, we celebrate our successes and reflect on our days, and we take turns leading, following, learning, and laughing!

Our students learn the ins and outs of the French Broad River Watershed, starting with the headwaters at the beginning of 6th grade. For their first of many weekly in-school field lessons, they explored the area around Devils Courthouse and Graveyard Fields while learning about the source of our school's namesake river.

Our fall Co-ed Seminar earlier this year was a hit! One group of students did a deep dive exploration of Fungi and Mushrooms in Pisgah National Forest. Then, they used pigment found in nature to make paints for beautiful watercolor art.
